Help desk jobs: what the work involves and what ads ask for
Help desk roles take calls, chats, and tickets, fix what they can, and escalate the rest. The BLS describes the work of computer user support specialists as diagnosing users’ computer problems, guiding them through the fix, and setting up or repairing equipment. It says these jobs “require some computer knowledge but not necessarily a college degree” and typically come with moderate-term on-the-job training. Because support may need to run around the clock, some specialists work nights or weekends (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
CompTIA A+ is the certification CompTIA aims at help desk roles. It takes two exams, Core 1 and Core 2. Whether an employer requires it varies, and the Entry Bar Check on each listing shows whether the ad lists it as a must-have or a plus. One route onward is tier 2 or desktop support, then junior sysadmin roles.
